Of Writing Choices

Menu Entrées are due every Thursday.
Some will be specific assignments given by the teacher.
If no specific assignment is given, you will choose one of the following menu options to complete.
Every student who has turned in every Menu Entrée throughout the year, will receive a free dessert in May.
Offer expires 5/31/13.
Some restrictions may apply.
See Mrs. Cannon for details.

Short Story – At least a one page story which includes the elements of fiction: characters, setting, plot (a problem with a solution), climax, conclusion, and lots of show not tell.

Poem(s) – At least 12 lines of poetry using poetry form rather than prose form.  Must be good quality with deep thought, imagery, and/or metaphor or no grade will be given until it is revised.  Limerick and Haiku are unacceptable.

Persuasive Essay – At least one page persuading your audience of something.  Be sure your thesis is clear and that you have at least three logical, supporting arguments to persuade your audience effectively.

Comparison/Contrast Essay – At least one page demonstrating the similarities and differences between two things.  Be sure to start with a bold statement of your opinion about the two things.  (For example:  Magleby’s at Trivani and Magleby’s Fresh both have a menu full of yummy things to order, but the classy ambiance of Magleby’s at Trivani makes it a better place to enjoy a nice dinner.)  In other words, pick a winner between the two things you are comparing.

Autobiographical Essay – At least one page describing an event from your life.  Include character description, setting, plot (problem with a solution), climax, conclusion, and lots of show not tell.

Research Essay – What have you always wanted to know?  Think like Myth Busters – Can cars really blow up?  Or if that doesn’t peak your interest, find something that does: What sort of people create video games?  Whose idea was it to spend 9 months out of the year in school?  What do you have to do to become a famous musician?  Research until you find an answer to your question, then write at least one page describing what you found.  Be sure to include a thesis statement, at least 3 sources, and a bibliography (2nd page).
