ME 4B - Hiding Place Test

ME 4B/Hiding Place Test
Write three paragraphs (7-11 sentences) answering three of the discussion questions.  Be sure to include a specific, quality, one-sentence thesis statement at the beginning of each paragraph.

1. Why do the ten Booms choose to hide Jews who are fleeing the Nazis? What are the consequences, both good and bad? Do you think it was wise?  Why or why not?

2. Why do you think Father refuse to accept the Germans’ offer to let him go home?

3.  Do you think the Bulldog do the right thing with his dogs?  Why or why not?

4.  On page 48 Corrie says that "it was astonishing really, the quality of life [Mama] was able to lead in that crippled body."  What does this say about the meaning of "quality of life"?  What does a person need in order to have a quality life?

5. On page 50 Corrie talks about the watch shop having "no system anywhere".  What kinds of systems do we have in our everyday life and why are they necessary?  What would life be like without any systems?

6. On page 57 the Ten Boom family believes that the Jews disappearing is "primarily a German problem" and they ask themselves why the Germans put up with Hitler.  Eventually it becomes clear that the problem is not just a German one.  Why do the people in Germany and Holland and other occupied countries put up with Hitler?  What could they have done differently?

7.  On page 138 Corrie describes a gentleman being beaten and she says that she "hated him for being helpless and hurt."  Why does she hate him?  What do you think she is feeling and why?

8. If you had to endure being locked up in a cell for weeks with 5 strangers, how would you spend your time?  What would be the best way to endure "prison boredom"?

9. On page 143 Corrie talks about "thoughts [that] led to such despair that [she] soon learned not to give in to them."  How do you avoid giving in to thoughts that make you sad?

10. When the nurse asks Corrie if she can do anything for her, Corrie asks for a Bible, a needle and thread, a toothbrush, and soap.  Why do you think she asks for those things?  What would you ask for and why?

11. Why do you think Corrie and Betsie were willing to risk getting "kalte kost" in order to keep their Bible?  In what ways was the Bible worth it to them?

12. On page 151 Corrie states that "someone who can see human faces" is rich.  If that's all you had was the ability to see others' faces would you consider yourself rich?  What other simple thiings might make you feel rich?  Why?

More questions to come....

ME 3B – Persuasive Paragraph – Protagonist/Antagonist - Due Thursday, February 13th

Choose an antagonist from a cartoon movie and write a thesis statement explaining why they are the most or least effective antagonist.  Then write a paragraph using specific reasons and examples to further defend ONE of your reasons.

Remember to include all of the parts of a thesis statement that we have discussed in class: the counter-argument, the main claim, and the three reasons.  The thesis statement should only be one sentence.

Have fun!
